177. Stop Quitting on Yourself: Why Your Consistency is More Powerful Than Your Program

Kristy Castillo

Have you ever caught yourself saying “nothing works for me”? If so, you’re NOT alone!

I recently had a call with a new client that turned into a major lightbulb moment - not just for her, but me, too!

One of the biggest hurdles that happens with your fitness journey is CONSISTENCY. While you’ve probably tried all the diets and programs under the sun by now, have you *actually* tried staying consistent with a REAL lifestyle change??

Most of us skip over the basics like eating more protein, lifting weights, walking regularly, and even getting more sleep. Yep - the boring, ‘unsexy’ stuff no one online wants to talk about, but actually works!

Fitness really isn’t that complicated, but…you’ve got to CONSISTENTLY show up for yourself (even when it feels like nothing is changing). This is where the magic *really* happens, because it’s in YOU and your habits - not another fancy gadget, program, or supplement.

I say all of this with LOVE, because I need you to believe in yourself. I hope this episode reminds you to stop quitting, and start showing up for yourself, consistently. You ARE worth it!!

In this episode, we cover:

  • What you’re actually staying consistent with + why this is keeping you from seeing lasting results
  • Why you need to stop chasing ‘shiny objects’ & master the basics in your life
  • Realizing the magic is actually in YOU (not another program or supplement)
  • Taking a hard look at the habits that got you where you are today + choosing to do the slower, ‘unsexy’ work that *really* works

Speaker 2:

to today's episode. This is going to be a short, sweet, spicy episode for sure, because I had a conversation yesterday that was very, very fun, very enlightening, very interesting and simple, short, sweet, but kind of a little kick in the ass that I think we all need sometimes. So I had a client come to me and we were talking about and it was her very, very first time talking with me on our one-on-one call. We had had a pre-screening call. That's not even literally what it is, but we just had a call where we talked about things. She asked questions about one-on-one coaching and what it's like to make sure that we're a good fit for each other. It was basically a half an hour conversation. That was so much fun.

Speaker 2:

But on this call that we had together it was our first she'd signed up. We have our first initial call where we talk about things and she's like I'm just so frustrated. I just started listening to your podcast a couple of months ago and I'm so excited and I know that you can help me and I'm so excited to work with you and all the things. But she said I want you to know that nothing works for me. Nothing ever works for me. I've tried every single diet, which this is very common, by the way. I've tried every single diet. I've tried everything out there, everything under the sun, everything with a name, everything, everything, and nothing ever works for me. So she's basically like good luck. I think she even said like so good luck with me, or something like that, and kind of being the smart ass that I was and my clients are so amazing and a lot like me in the sense that we can kind of be sarcastic with each other. And that's why I get the clients that I get, because they're done with the bullshit. They're done with just the copy paste. Here's a you know fitness program and here's some basic accountability. Like they want I need you to be able to do this stuff on your own and I need you to be ready when you come to me, like okay, I have tried all the things and I'm fed up not getting results. Like what freaking gives, we're going to talk through that. Like we're going to dive into stuff. Once you start with me, yeah, it's basic. Like you get the workout program, you get used to the app, you get some consistency, we get things going for you, and then we start to dive into like okay, how going for you. And then we start to dive into like, okay, how are you really feeling, what's going on?

Speaker 2:

But we kind of dove right into it with this particular client and she's like I've tried everything, so good luck, I'm really excited to work with you. But you've kind of got your work cut out for me and I said, have you ever been consistent with something? And kind of laughed and she was like, no, like I've done so many things, but I've quit them all, you know, within a couple of months. Because it's all the things right, like cutting out carbs, cutting out sugar, counting calories to a T, like all these basic whatever it is, counting your points, weighing every single food you eat, like all the things. All the things that you know. I don't need to go into it, you know you've done them all. You've done them all too, but have you ever done them consistently? Like, have you ever been really, really good at it? Have you ever tried something that you could maintain long term? And she said, well, no, it's good. They're all kind of quick fixes, I guess, like when I think about it, and they're all something that I have to start and quit. So then I either think, well, that diet worked and I go back and try it again and it works while I'm doing it, but then I fall off.

Speaker 2:

So we had this long conversation but basically what it came down to was consistency. And I've had another, probably more than one, but I know I've had another episode kind of like this, where I'm the one thing that you are doing is giving up on yourself. The one thing you've been consistent with is trying bullshit diet programs and then you quit. That is, you've been consistent with that, but you've never been consistent with a lifestyle workout program, a lifestyle workout, a lifestyle situation, whatever you want to call these right. And it was kind of like a light bulb went off when I said, well, have you been consistent with any of them? Have you been consistent with anything?

Speaker 2:

And she, of course, was like no and went into the details and I thought, god, that is so simple. When you break it down, fitness is so simple. Yes, there's complicated parts. We're all different and everything can be broken down into these little pieces that can be complicated. There's a lot of little moving parts. If you really get into it, you don't have to even really get into it, but we skip over A lot of times we go right to these complicated pieces and we're like well, it's this, this, this and this. We have the checklist. I have to do my water and I have to do my workouts. I have to do my walking, I have to do my steps, I have to run, I have to sprint, I have to do supplements, I have to. There's a long list of shit that you think you have to do and these are the shiny objects, these are the things people are making reels about and all the things you see and you're like oh, I haven't tried that yet.

Speaker 2:

I haven't tried that yet, but have you tried being consistent with eating enough protein, getting more steps in, like, take a freaking 30-minute walk every day and lift some weights? Have you been consistent with anything? I guess, is the question, and a lot of you are probably saying no, actually I haven't. And I don't mean perfect, I don't mean have you gone for a walk for 30 minutes for four months straight? I'm not saying consistent. Have you gone for a 30 minute walk three days a week for six months? Three days a week for six months? Have you been consistently going for a walk? Have you been consistently eating 120 grams of protein? Have you been consistently showing up for yourself? Have you been consistently getting up when your alarm goes off instead of pushing snooze? Have you been consistently increasing your water intake? Have you been consistently talking nicer to yourself? Have you been consistently hanging out with people that lift you up? Have you been consistently?

Speaker 2:

Question mark, because I fear the answer is no, and I fear that is the easiest thing that we need to be doing, and I fear it is that simple and we're not doing it. It's like I have tried every single diet known to man and none of them work for me. And this is no hate to my client. I told her I'm going to put you on blast on an episode about this because it's so freaking good, because you've tried every single thing Not literally, but we think we get to that point in our fitness journey where we're like I have tried every single diet plan, I've listened to every single podcast, I follow every single influencer, I have done everything. I am at my wits end. I'm overweight, I'm exhausted. I've tried everything, I can't lose weight, I can't look different, I can't, I can't. I've tried everything and I can't.

Speaker 2:

Those are the things that kind of go together and in reality, you haven't tried the most simple shit of getting your shit together and doing that consistently. You've not actually tried to do things that matter. You've tried every cop-out. You've tried every influencer's program that only wants your money. You've tried everything that seems quick. You've tried everything that you can just pay for and take the guesswork out of it. You've tried everything that doesn't work, because you've tried everything that's cheap and easy and shitty. And you know it. You know, when you sign up for these programs like, oh, I'm going to sign up for I'm not even going to name a name because that would kind of be rude and I can't even think of one, that one in particular, because they all kind of piss me off you know, when you sign up for it let's just say Beachbody I don't know because I've worked with them.

Speaker 2:

You know when you sign up for that it's not the program, that's the magic. You have to do the workouts. You have to track the food. You have to drink the shake. The shake is not magical. Beachbody is not magical. The workouts aren't magical, not even anything that I give you to do. My workouts aren't any better than any other great fitness trainer out there. They're good, they're great, but they're not better than they're not the best in the world.

Speaker 2:

What I'm telling you is great information, and you should freaking listen to me, because I know what I'm talking about. But the magic isn't in me. The magic isn't in the shake or the aura ring or the weighted vest or the patella bands that I use, or the workouts, or the app or any of this shit. The magic is in you. Magic is in you. The magic is in you believing in yourself and showing up for yourself consistently and what you want to show up for yourself for if you want to go for walks, if you want to lift weights, if you want to go to yoga, if you want to do Pilates, if you want to do spin classes I don't care what you start to do, as long as you start to do it consistently. And if you do it consistently for a very long time and this is not sexy and this is why no one freaking says it, but I guess I'm going to a very long time you will see results.

Speaker 2:

If you keep buying shitty, shiny objects, using them for about a month, if that, putting them away to collect dust and saying I tried everything no, you didn't You're lying to yourself. You're lying to me when you get on and say I've tried everything. You bought everything. Did you even try it, though? Have you tried it consistently? No, like, let's be real here. Okay, now let's flip this around, because I'm done beating up on you, but I hope that that really opened your eyes to be like okay, she called bullshit on me. I'm going to also call bullshit on myself, but I hope that that really opened your eyes to be like okay, she called bullshit on me. I'm going to also call bullshit on myself. I just need you to start showing up for yourself consistently. Okay, I need you to know that you can do this. I need you to know that you don't need shiny objects.

Speaker 2:

The magic isn't in any other object or any other program. The magic is in you believing in yourself. That's why I have this podcast to really say things that matter to you. That's why I do my one-on-one coaching the way that I do. I can't make you show up. I can't go to your house and hold your hand and get you out of bed and make you do this shit. I need you to know already that you can do this shit, and you want to know why it works, and you want to know how to be consistent, and you want to know. This is my life, christy. What do I need to do consistently? I'll do it. This is my life. I need to fit things into my life that I can do consistently. Help me do that, I'll help you. But it's that consistency piece. Stop doing these shitty workout programs, objects, supplements, all these things thinking this is the thing. Creatine isn't going to help you with anything if you don't use it consistently and if you don't also move your body, okay, nothing is going to help you. Measuring your food won't help you if you don't do it consistently and if you don't know why you're doing it. Working out doesn't help you if you don't do it consistently. You can't show up for two weeks and say it's not working. For me, it's been two weeks, dude. What do you think is going on here? Like this is crazy.

Speaker 2:

I also had someone come to me and say, like over the last year, I've gained, you know, 10 pounds and I don't, you know, I don't want this on my body anymore. Like how can I get it off? I need to. And I said, what if, realistically, what if it took you 10, a year to lose the 10 pounds? It took you a year to put it on and that's not. That's not really that bad. She's younger and just getting into the college life and the you know the life. The life and things are stressful and body's changing and life's changing and priorities are changing and she's growing up and maturing into a new body.

Speaker 2:

But I said what if, realistically, it took you a year to put this 10 pounds on? Are you willing to do the work that it would take if it took a year to get it off? And she said, well, absolutely not. I don't want it to take a year. And I said, well, it's not going to.

Speaker 2:

But I want you to actually think if it took a year for you to gain 10 pounds because you gradually changed your life into a way that caused you to gain 10 pounds, if we could gradually change it to a way pivoting forward, that you could lose that 10 pounds, maintain it, grow an entirely new body, a strong, sexy, curvy, badass body, or I could help you lose 10 pounds really quick. You'll learn nothing, you'll probably feel like shit, you'll be hungry, you won't understand. You'll probably then not understand it so much. You'll bounce back and gain another 15 pounds on top of that that's not what anybody wants to hear, but you consistently in that situation, consistently got yourself into some habits that caused you to gain 10 pounds. If you think about it, it could possibly and probably in a healthy way it would take you a year to lose that 10 pounds in a healthy way, to sustain it, build a new sexy body that you love and you understand and you care for and you have a good relationship with. But no one wants to hear that, and I'm not saying you have to do it that way or that it would really take a year. But if we think it took me over the last 10 years I've gained X amount of weight. Well, what if it takes you that long to get it off?

Speaker 2:

We need to be more serious about this. Put in some work, put in some thought that what we do matters and what we do consistently whether it be drink too much, eat too much, sleep like shit too much all those things matter. You need to start doing things consistently that are healthy and that are good for you. So I love you so much. Thank you for listening.

Speaker 2:

Take this and go into the weekend and really think about your habits and think about what you've done consistently because that's gotten you to where you are and if you want to be in another place, you're going to have to do things consistently. But stop lying to yourself and stop lying to me and saying you've quote unquote tried everything because you haven't tried the easiest thing, the most simple thing, maybe not easy. I think it's easy. Consistency is very easy for me, actually, but I'm very specific about what I'm consistent with and I don't say I'm going to try something unless I know I can be consistent with it. That might be a good podcast episode for in the future, but think about this this came from a place of love tough love, but love. And I'll talk to you in the next episode.
